“We can start doing small things like the camp to help raise awareness so there’s less waste left behind.”

Living on an island like Mauritius is what inspired husband-and-wife duo Alexandra, a human resources specialist, and Maesh, an event producer and local radio host, to make beach cleaning a regular household activity. “When we see pictures of Mauritius 50 years back, or talk to people who have been coming here the past 20 to 30 years, they talk about the island as a dreamy holiday, they didn’t speak of pollution at that time,” says Maesh. The couple, who often snorkel and scuba dive, can see the impact this pollution is making on their “small piece of rock in the Indian Ocean.”

One of the more creative ways they’ve found to give back is through the recently launched @MauriCamp, an outdoor cinema and camping experience where the idea is to discover new areas across the island and leave each beach cleaner than when they arrived. “We are so lucky to live on an island surrounded by nature,” says Alexandra. “My daughter shouldn’t be playing with plastic mixed in to the shells on the beach. We can start doing small things like the camp to help raise awareness so there’s less waste left behind.”
