Carolina

Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

After 10 years in New York City working as a diplomat at the United Nations Security Council, as well as consul of Costa Rica, Carolina is now back home in Costa Rica. From her treehouse in Santa Teresa, she launched the 5 Minute Beach Cleanup Movement in 2016 as a way to educate the local and global community.

Two years later, together with Mauricio Cortés, they created the 5 Minute Foundation, a nonprofit organization designed to go beyond five-minute beach cleanups, through initiatives like marine debris upcycling and educational campaigns. “If we don’t do anything, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean,” says Carolina. The foundation has built up a fanbase of 70,000 followers in social media channels that, altogether, are now influencing others to be part of the change. Learn more at 5minutefoundation.org
